Lampworking - 9.30am - 12.00 pm Saturday 9th August 2025

NZ$240.00

General Information:

Come and learn the ancient and fascinating method of creating flameworked glass objects (also known as lampworking) where glass is melted in a flame using an oxygen and LPG torch. Jo is passionate about glass and has been glassmaking for ten years. She is proficient in fusing, casting and flameworking techniques. In addition, Jo was an English Language Teacher for a number of years in the private sector, teaching English to Speakers of other Languages who were in the age range of 18 - 80 years. In a previous life she also taught ballet, tap and jazz to both adults and children. To see more of her bio please click here.

In all lessons you will learn about safety, tools, equipment, proper lighting, and how to fire glass for strength and durability. All glass materials, the use of equipment, gas, safety gear, and the kiln firing of your glass are included in the price of your lesson. As your glass objects need to be processed in a kiln afterwards, they can not be taken home on the day. The cost of *cleaning and posting of your glass creations is also included in the fee.
*Please note that if you reside outside of New Zealand, there might be an additional charge for postage of your glass creations depending on which country you are from.

These classes are a private lesson for two and a half hours, working at your own pace with glassmaker Jo Tricker. However, one bead class can be shared with two people which means the cost for one 2.5 hour class can also be shared. Just bear in mind that each person would get about 1 1/4 hours time each on the torch and would likely make only 2 - 5 beads each (depending on ability).

*Glass flower classes can’t be shared as the whole 2.5 hours is required to form the flower components.

Tuition is conducted in Jo's own home studio in Brookfield, Tauranga. Minimum age requirement is 12 years of age. Parents or caregivers or welcome to stay and watch for the whole lesson.

A PDF with information of what to bring/expect will be sent to you a few weeks before your class.

A bead-making lesson is a really great present for friends or family members - buy one to give a gift with a real difference!

*****

Beginner Bead Lesson 1: Doughnut Beads, Round Beads, Dots and Spots, Stripes:

Learn how to make basic doughnut shaped beads and round beads in colours of your choice. Once you have made a few of those you will then make more and learn how to decorate them with dots and spots and stripes! Expect to make 6 - 15 beads in this class depending on ability.

Beginner Bead Lesson 2: Doughnut Beads, Round Beads, Raking, Frits and Powders.

In this lesson you will learn how to make round and doughnut shaped beads and then how to roll them in glass powders of different colours and sizes. You will learn how to make patterns on your beads using a raking technique - similar to patterns that are made on the icing of cakes! You can expect to make 6 - 15 beads in this class depending on ability.

Intermediate Bead Lesson:

Learn how to blend glass colours together into candy-like glass sticks, which you will then use to decorate and customise your beads. Once finished you will cover (encase) your beads in clear glass to give them depth and a different perspective. We will also make forced, bubble beads.

Participants must have completed either Beginner Bead Lesson 1 or 2, or have had prior lampworking experience to do this lesson.

Flower Lampworking Lesson:

This class is an introduction to sculpting with hot glass! You will learn how to form petal and leaf components which will be used to construct a flower on a metal stem. Depending on ability, you will make between 1 - 3 flowers that can then be put into vases or flower pots as decorative elements. This class is suitable for beginners.

Combo Beadmaking Class: A combination of two classes!

If you are very keen and would like to go the whole hog - choose two classes and make a day of it! Combine either Beginner Class 1 and the Intermediate class OR Beginner Class 2 and the Intermediate Class to make a total five hour lesson. You can choose to have both lessons on the one day with an hour break in between, or split your lessons over the two days. Combo bookings receive a $20 discount.
